FAQs

See some of the most frequently asked questions below.

What can be done on a home visit?

Just as in the clinic situation, how much can be done in terms of, for instance, physical examination will depend on the degree of co-operation from your pet.

Animals that are ill may be more docile and animals that are in pain may be less so. With Tim’s 30+ years experience he usually finds that with care and patience most pets will allow a reasonably comprehensive check up. Blood tests can be taken, fine needle aspirates may be taken for cytology and ear swabs can be taken to look for bacterial or fungal involvement.

Ultrasound examination at home is possible with Tim’s portable scanner, and while not a substitute for a full ultrasound examination at the clinic this can provide very useful diagnostic information.

Should I inform my current vet that I have requested a visit?

Yes please. It is vital that Tim has knowledge of your pet’s medical history prior to your visit. You will need to contact your vet to request that a copy of your pet’s clinical history is emailed to Tim at info@timthevet.co.uk. Please explain that you wish to use the veterinary services of Tim the Vet to supplement your pet’s veterinary care and that you do not wish to change your primary source of veterinary care.

Tim will keep your regular local vet clinic updated regarding clinical findings and treatment, and liaise with them regarding ongoing treatment and advice for further investigations.

In this way your pet will enjoy the benefit of a less stressful home visit while maintaining a connection with your usual vet for more complicated treatment or hospitalisation should this be needed.

What should I do in an emergency?

Tim is happy to take calls out of hours for advice and may be able to undertake a home visit where this is the best course of action. It may be obvious in an emergency situation that utilising the emergency services provided by your local vet clinic is the
first course of action to take. Tim will usually be able to give an out of hours emergency provider an update of your pet’s medical history. There will be occasions when this is not possible, for instance, if Tim is already on a visit, and where out of
hours cover for your local clinic is at a different site it is advisable to keep a copy of your pet’s clinical history. Tim will email you an up to date history for your pet including ongoing advice and treatment after every visit.

Are visits covered by pet insurance?

Tim the Vet is a registered veterinary practice with the RCVS and invoices should be acceptable to your pet insurer. Some Insurers only cover the cost of home visits where this is deemed necessary. Most vet clinics charge visit fees as a separate item but as a visiting vet the invoice will just state consultation fee rather than visit fee. It is important to check your insurance policy terms and conditions. It is not currently possible to process claims for payment direct to myself. Our normal terms are payment at the time of service and then, where the pet is covered by pet insurance for the current condition, the insurance company should reimburse you following submission of the claim form.

Many families choose Tim based on recommendations and reviews.

We found Tim online after looking for a mobile vet. Tim was easily reachable and accommodated our available hours and done a home visit consultation. He was very honest and knowledgeable. He then came a few days ago to sadly put our dog to sleep. Highly recommend Tim and we will be using him for our other pets when needed. Thanks once again Tim.
